It was the “inscrutable” slur there…it’s normally directed at the Chinese, not Japanese…After all, a country bigger than the USA with five times the population has to instill dread, even at the prostate state it was pre WW II,
then the Japanese were seen as civilisation’s vanguard in those days…

And like most Eurasians she is striking. I don’t understand it but I saw it enough while I was in service to know it’s real. Somehow, you can take the homelielest GI and put him with the plainest, most nondescript Asian woman and if they have a daughter she will flat out stop traffic for a quarter mile. Damnedest thing you ever saw. Their sons never seem to want for dates either.

Asians aren’t inscrutable but they are hard for us roundeyes to read – because of those eyes of theirs. I raised a full-blood Japanese from newborn to adulthood. Read ’em like a “Dick and Jane” book. You just gotta know what to look for.
