This makes all the offspring fair chase even obongo’s. We’ll see if Ted’s got the stones to go Jungle Rules. By the way my little engineer daughter is kinda scary, she supposedly has a classroom persona that scares some people. Keeps her 4.0 though.

Sometimes I think it’s a shame our ‘toonist here is so classy, as I imagine the imagery he could produce of the O tribe.

Will Skye find herself glued to something?

Maybe she’ll find some bodily orifice glued when she wants to use it most. . . . (just sayin’)

If you’re correcting English it should read “Aunt Skye and I…” not “Me and Auny Skye….”

Zed should start teaching Kiko to shoot soon (if he isn’t already).

Kiko has small fast hands and dextrous digits. Zed will have her field stripping and cleaning a Garand M-1 any time now. After that. All rifles are easy!

I seem to recall a while back Zed had them reloading ammunition as some sort of homework assignment.

I believe that was the gist from Kiko’s point of view.

My little engineer was reloading 12 and 20 ga at 7. “Teach’em right and they will do it right the rest of their lives, teach’em wrong and they send the rest of their lives learning to do it right” Col. Hackworth. He says this a bunch of times in “About Face.” Great read for leadership lessons.

Ouch! M1 thumb! Don’t know if her fast, dextrous little hands are strong enough . I never field stripped an M1 but at one time I could FS&R an M14 (lineal descendant of the M1) in under 90 seconds blindfolded. Required a bit of hand strength. My wife’s arthritic old hands aren’t very strong so I get to strip her Sig P232 for cleaning – although she gets to do the scut work. Then I reassemble it. I’d hate to see Kiko get her thumb smashed by an M1. Smal as her hands are likely it’d break her thumb.

        Hi, Otto:

I mentioned field stripping and cleaning and left out reassembly because “M-1 Thumb” does loom large. And is a job more suited to Zed while Kiko watches and learns.

Oh… And nice catch on the youtube clip, H_B!

You mean that you would not take out a polar bear hunter as it was attempting to kill you, or to kill someone else?

I just couldn’t imaging not wanting to try to defend people’s lives from murder or attempted murder.

Yeah. well that made sense in response to something that I don’t see there now. 🙂 Nice removal.

And, for when the kid is nine, I already had a long rifle and knew how to take care of it, including disassemble and reassembly. Field strip as they say. I knew the field strip part much younger, but was not allowed to keep it in my room until 9.

And superglue in 5 year old hands? Well. She does know about what surfaces will and will not bond. What could possibly go wrong, Pamela.

      BINGO!

This last month, I taught my grandling how to catch a squirrel with a stick.

He was successful — and delighted.

Did that old saw actually work?

        Unca Walt

It’s on YouTube now. Whippy, short stick with a 3/4″ fork end.

Stick it in the hole in the tree (you saw the squirrel go in… thass huntin’) and begin to twist it around and around. You will hear gawdalmighty growling and hissing. That’s good.

After a dozen or so turns, slowly pull the stick out of the hole. There will be a totally pissed-off squirrel hanging by his tail.

Clock him with a stick. Dinner.

This works for rabbits, too. Apparently nobody has ever filmed this with squirrels as the prey. The fork prongs on the stick in this video are WAY too long for squirrels. They are perfect for rabbits, though.

The rabbit stick is not flexible enough for squirrels, either. (I like a sassafras sapling).

Sometimes it worked two or three at a time, key is a short stick ’cause them little buggers is fast!

My old daddy (yesterday woulda been his 88th b-day, he’s been gone 22 yrs. but I talked with him a little bit in my mind and told him I still miss him every day) claimed to catch his with a stick too, -a boom stick- with which he “barked” ’em so as not to ruin the meat; never knew how true that was, but the old man grew up hardscrabble in middle TN and he was a pretty tight shot, so…

      • December 23, 2015 at 11:48 am

Dang, I never saw that method Unca W., but I can attest to the efficacy of the box as mentioned below.
