They’re only backing Ted as a spoiler candidate. At this point, Ted Cruz requires 97% of all remaining unpledged delegates to earn the nomination. When the New York primary rolls around, which Mr “anti-New York Values” is guaranteed to lose, he will lose all chance of being the nominee. No longer possible.
Cruz and Kasich will both be discarded after the first ballot in a brokered convention. But the GOPe only gets a chance at a brokered convention if they stay in the race, so Kasich was told to “remain in”, even though it is mathematically impossible for him to get the nomination.

The strategic bombing of Germany and Japan by the USAAF and RAF is still considered “controversial”, especially the B-29 “fire raids” of Tokyo, etc. The strategic bombing and “Robot Blitz” of England by the Nazis somehow never gets mentioned.
And as far as the “enlightened” critics are concerned, the Japanese strategic bombing of about half of China from 1932 to 1945 simply does not exist. (The other half went “un-bombed” mainly due to the limited range and payload of Japanese Army and Navy bombers.)
You really can’t destroy an enemy’s “will to fight” by inflicting casualties; it never worked for Germany or Japan. It certainly will not work on an enemy that defines martyrdom as a feature, rather than a bug.
What works is destroying the enemy’s capability to make war upon you. Which includes killing his foot soldiers. Wherever they may be.
It is more difficult when the enemy does not require bombers, missiles, etc., to make war upon you, but instead relies upon terror tactics inflicted upon your civilian population “up close and personal” for a preference instead of engaging your armed forces in the field. In fact, this enemy will avoid open-field engagement whenever possible, because killing non-combatants before anything else is part of their cultural background (“blood feuds”).
It’s called “asymmetric warfare” by academics. Many of whom today cheer the terrorists. (Remember “a million Mogadishus”?)
Would that they were as critical of our enemies (who would be as happy to kill them as anyone else) as they are of us.
BTW, as long as we’re talking ROE, Geneva, etc., I would point out that combatants who refuse to wear a uniform or some other obvious identifier of their combatant status have no protection under the Convention or the Hague Accords. They are considered outlaws, not “soldiers”.
No matter what- or who- they use as a shield.

Asymmetric warfare has been around for millennia, and embraced enthusiastically since the Scots invented guerrilla warfare. It’s simply a way of leveling the playing field when faced with deficiencies in the ability to wage conventional warfare. Heck, the Colonials used it in our own revolution, particularly in the South. And just a tiny addendum to your description of the international law governing guerrillas: the deciding factor is whether or not the forces represent a state, because only states can sign, and agree to being governed by, international agreements. So say the US, for example, is fighting against the irregular forces. The irregulars are not protected, as you rightly note. However, as a signatory to the various treaties, the US would be constrained, to at least some degree.

The trouble with this vs. the Islamists is that they really don’t produce their own warmaking materials to any great extent. Their main weapon sources are China, Europe, and still to a great extent Russia (no matter what Putin claims).
Their purely “domestic” arms industries are mainly in Iran (who we don’t bomb), Egypt (who is supposed to be our ally), and Saudi Arabia (where frankly anything can be had for the right price in the right hands).
To cut their arms supply chain, we’d have to attack people we are supposed to not be at war with.
This is another drawback of being on the wrong end of asymmetric warfare. The other sides’ backers are often at once more dangerous, and largely untouchable.
Breaking that paradigm isn’t easy. In fact, in the MidEast, it would tend to lead inevitably to the final iteration of Wretchard’s Three Conjectures;

Exactly what my Father-in-law (B-24 flight engineer/top gunner) was doing when shot down. They were coming back from bombing Ploesti when their aircraft was brought down by flack. He had the “pleasure” of an expenses-paid vacation at one of those “resort communities” run by the 3rd Reich in Poland. Then he got to go on an extended “nature hike” sometimes referred to as the “German Death March” (google it). He had so much fun he wouldn’t even tell us about it. Guess he didn’t want to make us jealous.

Think of all the WWII bombers that dropped bombs on cities such as Berlin, Dresden, Nagasaki, Hiroshima. They had to know there were women and children. There were women and children working in those factories with the intent on killing Allied troops and civilians in Britain. The Magyars have been moved from the Caucus Mountain region to where they are now by expansion of Islam into tribes next to them. About a thousand years ago they took the general area where they are now. They then proceeded to plunder all of Europe at will for about 80 years until 5 nations separate armies coordinated and literally headed them off at the pass and blocked them, forcing them to fight their way out. They then settled around where they are now and became peacefully semi war like, similar to much of Europe.
We are at that point. The people occupying the white house are bringing in Muslim warriors in vast numbers to the USA and they forced millions into Europe. The “Arab Spring” did not happen by chance. Nor did Qaddafi die by chance. Qaddafi predicted the invasion of Europe if he and others were killed.
All Muslims brought in contrary to law must be removed from here and Europe. that is the only way to “solve” the problem that having Muslims invade a nation brings. Emigration conquest is praised and said to be rewarded in Paradise in the Koran. That is a part of Islamic war as old as Islam itself. the prophet used hijrah emigration in conquering what is now Medina. That was Islam’s first conquest.
Trump sees the problem and appears to be willing to attempt to find what will work to solve the problems threatening our survival. He also appears to be willing to discuss many means to solve problems until one that is workable. It seems that he will listen to others as to how far to take matters. That he is willing to discuss matters and not keep all agendas quiet and hidden is better than all politicians that I have observed.
I do not see any other politician who has an approach to the problems that will work to actually address the problems bluntly, much less solve them.
I believe that Trump will serve the people and the nation, which is the people. If he feels great and stroked and stoked after serving the people. all the better.
I am sure that he will enjoy the DDQ.

I did my 20, I studied Hague and Geneva. I was in from the ass end of Viet Nam past Desert Storm, and a whole bunch of other shit that “never happened”. You win a war by making the enemy afraid you’ll return to finish the job. This particular enemy we face hides behind said women and children so they can shoot us in the back as we walk away.

The strategic bombing of Germany and Japan by the USAAF and RAF is still considered “controversial”, especially the B-29 “fire raids” of Tokyo, etc. The strategic bombing and “Robot Blitz” of England by the Nazis somehow never gets mentioned.
And as far as the “enlightened” critics are concerned, the Japanese strategic bombing of about half of China from 1932 to 1945 simply does not exist. (The other half went “un-bombed” mainly due to the limited range and payload of Japanese Army and Navy bombers.)
You really can’t destroy an enemy’s “will to fight” by inflicting casualties; it never worked for Germany or Japan. It certainly will not work on an enemy that defines martyrdom as a feature, rather than a bug.
What works is destroying the enemy’s capability to make war upon you. Which includes killing his foot soldiers. Wherever they may be.
It is more difficult when the enemy does not require bombers, missiles, etc., to make war upon you, but instead relies upon terror tactics inflicted upon your civilian population “up close and personal” for a preference instead of engaging your armed forces in the field. In fact, this enemy will avoid open-field engagement whenever possible, because killing non-combatants before anything else is part of their cultural background (“blood feuds”).
It’s called “asymmetric warfare” by academics. Many of whom today cheer the terrorists. (Remember “a million Mogadishus”?)
Would that they were as critical of our enemies (who would be as happy to kill them as anyone else) as they are of us.
BTW, as long as we’re talking ROE, Geneva, etc., I would point out that combatants who refuse to wear a uniform or some other obvious identifier of their combatant status have no protection under the Convention or the Hague Accords. They are considered outlaws, not “soldiers”.

Asymmetric warfare has been around for millennia, and embraced enthusiastically since the Scots invented guerrilla warfare. It’s simply a way of leveling the playing field when faced with deficiencies in the ability to wage conventional warfare. Heck, the Colonials used it in our own revolution, particularly in the South. And just a tiny addendum to your description of the international law governing guerrillas: the deciding factor is whether or not the forces represent a state, because only states can sign, and agree to being governed by, international agreements. So say the US, for example, is fighting against the irregular forces. The irregulars are not protected, as you rightly note. However, as a signatory to the various treaties, the US would be constrained, to at least some degree.
The Scots cannot claim to have invented guerilla warfare. The Myth of the Peaceful Savage clearly makes the point that this type of warfare has existed far longer than most academics claim.
The enemy must deny the materiel he needs for war, as well. No bullets means less dead allies. The bombing in Germany and Japan killed many factory workers and factories. Amateurs talk strategy. Professionals talk logistics.

The trouble with this vs. the Islamists is that they really don’t produce their own warmaking materials to any great extent. Their main weapon sources are China, Europe, and still to a great extent Russia (no matter what Putin claims).
Their purely “domestic” arms industries are mainly in Iran (who we don’t bomb), Egypt (who is supposed to be our ally), and Saudi Arabia (where frankly anything can be had for the right price in the right hands).
To cut their arms supply chain, we’d have to attack people we are supposed to not be at war with.
This is another drawback of being on the wrong end of asymmetric warfare. The other sides’ backers are often at once more dangerous, and largely untouchable.
Breaking that paradigm isn’t easy. In fact, in the MidEast, it would tend to lead inevitably to the final iteration of Wretchard’s Three Conjectures;

Exactly what my Father-in-law (B-24 flight engineer/top gunner) was doing when shot down. They were coming back from bombing Ploesti when their aircraft was brought down by flack. He had the “pleasure” of an expenses-paid vacation at one of those “resort communities” run by the 3rd Reich in Poland. Then he got to go on an extended “nature hike” sometimes referred to as the “German Death March” (google it). He had so much fun he wouldn’t even tell us about it. Think of all the WWII bombers that dropped bombs on cities such as Berlin, Dresden, Nagasaki, Hiroshima. They had to know there were women and children. There were women and children working in those factories with the intent on killing Allied troops and civilians in Britain. Hungary’s Prime Minister is pointing out that the end of Europe as a Western Civilization is at stake. The Magyars have been moved from the Caucus Mountain region to where they are now by expansion of Islam into tribes next to them. About a thousand years ago they took the general area where they are now. They then proceeded to plunder all of Europe at will for about 80 years until 5 nations separate armies coordinated and literally headed them off at the pass and blocked them, forcing them to fight their way out. They then settled around where they are now and became peacefully semi war like, similar to much of Europe.
We are at that point. The people occupying the white house are bringing in Muslim warriors in vast numbers to the USA and they forced millions into Europe. The “Arab Spring” did not happen by chance. Nor did Qaddafi die by chance. Qaddafi predicted the invasion of Europe if he and others were killed.
All Muslims brought in contrary to law must be removed from here and Europe. that is the only way to “solve” the problem that having Muslims invade a nation brings. Emigration conquest is praised and said to be rewarded in Paradise in the Koran. That is a part of Islamic war as old as Islam itself. the prophet used hijrah emigration in conquering what is now Medina. That was Islam’s first conquest.
Trump sees the problem and appears to be willing to attempt to find what will work to solve the problems threatening our survival. He also appears to be willing to discuss many means to solve problems until one that is workable. It seems that he will listen to others as to how far to take matters. That he is willing to discuss matters and not keep all agendas quiet and hidden is better than all politicians that I have observed.
I do not see any other politician who has an approach to the problems that will work to actually address the problems bluntly, much less solve them.
I believe that Trump will serve the people and the nation, which is the people. If he feels great and stroked and stoked after serving the people. all the better.
I am sure that he will enjoy the DDQ.
