There were 28,000 acres available in southwest Texas, Big Bend country, a year ago, if you had the money for it. Plenty of room to run cattle and build a shooting range, but you do have to be able to deal with horses if you’re going there. That, and take a hogleg with you if you hit the back sections. Snakes out there, y’know.

Unless it borders on what lil Federal land there is. The land grab that the Bureau of Land Management is trying to do in Northern Texas, they are trying to use the Corps of Engineers as a cover.
Folks, surveying Deeded Land, where the original Deed was likely surveyed by a Spanish surveyor, using a legal length that was certified by the current Spanish King. The Legal length kept changing, oft as the King changed. Which means that rerunning olde Spanish Land Surveys means knowing which legal length the olde surveyor had to use…
Oh, and you also have to confirm the Magnetic Declination he used, by proving a nice straight Line on the ground, matching one in the Deed, then doing a Starshot to prove today’s Magnetic Declination, and finding out the difference from the Declination used by the Spanish surveyor.
Then, set all into your Laptop, hook it up to the GPS unit, and have fun following the old Metes and Bounds, with your 4×4, or with your horses…
This is already happening on my land, but not by the feds per se. Way back when I was immersed in survey at Fr. Sill, we did everything mechanically – 100 feet at a time, trying to keep straight using a telescope or theodolite. Things have changed. With technical innovation, we can measure a position to less than a centimeter and an altitude, the same. I’m not sure we need a chain gang to survey. However, this means that every survey done in the last 250++ years has inherent error. THESE surveys are not being done to steal land, but to correct the errors of the past. Most farmers and ranchers don’t want to move a fence for a few inches technical error. They just leave the fence where it is, mark it and the surveyor puts in a stake in the corrected position. These “red River” fights have been with us forever, anywhere you have a meandering line or a natural boundary. Most owners just work their way through. It is only when a non-technical bureaucrat wants to exercise some personal power or wants to punish a political enemy do we get this crap.
