We have been thinking of you during this difficult time for you, Chris. Even people at work who never saw your strip were very touched by your memorial picture to your dad.

    Fitting.

Day is done, gone the sun,

All is well, safely rest, God is nigh.

Moving multi-day tribute to your dad Chris. Sincerest condolences. It is always a rough transition when a parent leaves us. Not a day goes by that I don’t miss my dad and I lost him in ’88.

Very well done send-off you’ve shared with your extended family here, online. We all grieve with you, Chris. Just know that the heart tearing pain will pass and you will move beyond this. You’ll never forget your old man, but you’ll find yourself remembering more good and funny stuff and less of the painful part. I survived. My wife snd best friend survived. Stay strong, bro.

Shoes to fill. Through the generations, Fathers prepared their Sons to take over. Zed received a grounding foundation from his parents. Zed received and earned additional training for this day from his work. The preparation for this day started at birth and the transfer is now complete.

Keep an eye on the horizon.

Isn’t this a bit soon, Chris? Scott Bieser took a full week off from QV when his dad passed. As I said before, take all the time you need. We’ll keep.

Oh, and, for the record, I don’t think anybody expect to feel qualified to fill their dad’s shoes. Anybody that does either had a crappy dad or their kids do.

I cannot speak for anyone else, but it seems to me that comparing the amount of time away from the strips Mr. Muir and Mr. Bieser each took seems like a pretty cheap shot. Everyone processes grief differently. Taking less time before resuming posting does not show less respect, nor does it indicate less grief. Getting flippant with the following posts might, but that’s not what happened here. These last several posts, all published August 1st though backdated, are a very loving and respectful tribute.

    Chris:

I went to a memorial service some years ago for an old sailor, the memorial words said by an old salt still ring true to me today. He spoke of the influence a single life has on those around him and put it in these simple terms “small boat, big wake.”

Achingly beautiful week, Chris. The one thing in life there is no way around, over, or under. You must go through it. You will never get over it. The pain, when it comes, will always be sharp and deep. But gradually it will come less often, and not last quite as long, because the good memories have more power.

UNDER the wide and starry sky
Dig the grave and let me lie:
Glad did I live and gladly die,
And I laid me down with a will.

This be the verse you ‘grave for me:
    Here he lies where he long’d to be;
Home is the sailor, home from the sea,
And the hunter home from the hill.

I’ve have asked myself many times in situations what my dad would say or do after he passed. It has helped me.

Filling your Father’s shoes….aww, Gawd…. You will find you talk to them every day, asking advise, wanting their feed-back on something you’re up to your eyeballs in.
My Mom passed too soon, in ’75. Dad followed in ’87. And I’m still asking their opinion….
The Hurt remains, but it does….temper?…. Over time. You learn to live with it.
