“Woman, go make me a sammich.”
Not that I ever need to ask. She usually is asking me what do I want for dinner, and do I want more (when I’m usually full two servings back).

That’s the satire. I never need to say that. The “sammich” is already done. My Good Wife of Many Decades usually had dinner made by the time I get home from work. And if I’m late due to running a few too many errands on the way home from work, she gets mad (and deservedly so) because dinner will be overcooked, or getting cold. She makes excellent “sammiches”.

She didn’t make a play on this visit. Zed groped her, unaware of who it was.
Skye was actually surprisingly decent about it considering her past behavior. She didn’t try to prolong the contact, she didn’t try to exploit it, and she didn’t try to turn it into drama.
She may fail in the attempt, but I suspect she’s actually going to give the whole “growing up and wising up” thing a shot.

Still, a mostly naked and very contrite Sam making me a sammich would not be so bad either.

One of the things I love about DBD is your reader interactions and their seamless integration into the strip, Chris. I knew as soon as I saw it that you were playing off that recent “clue” comment – well done!

First off Chris let me commend you on a very interesting thought experiment, whether intentional or not. I enjoy events like this as they give me an opportunity to examine my reactions and the beliefs they are founded on to see if they are consistent. I have also found it interesting to read the discussion.
Some observations:
1) Numerous posters claimed that it is never all right to hit a woman (though some did allow a self defense exception) while others (joined interestingly enough in some cases by their wives) have taken the position that in this situation Sam had it coming.
What I find interesting is that it points out that one size fits all rules (the hallmark of big government/bureaucrats) are rarely applicable in all situations. Rather the more closely the rule-making is to the persons involved the better.
2) Replace Sam with Anatoly as the party in the wrong (okay the events would be different but the betrayal would be comparable). Who here would have objected had Zed decked him? I suspect few.
If she requires special protections she is not my equal.
3) There have been numerous occasions where I have seen calls here for one sort of violence or another against other females both fictitious and real. In some cases far more serious than some swats on the ass with a paddle. In all such cases the targets of those calls had the common characteristic of not agreeing philosophically with those targeting them.
Do the laws of chivalry only apply to those who agree with us? Do the ends justify the means?
Similarly in a previous (much applauded) story arc Naomi cleared out a bar of Muslims. Whether you think they had it coming or not the (as I recall it) universal applause would suggest it is fine for a woman to beat the crap out of a man.
How many here have condemned politicians for promoting one set of rules for themselves and their “friends” and another for the rest of us?
4) There is no way from “Ka-Whack” and “Ka-Wok” to know just hard Zed was paddling Sam. While that is a question only Chris can answer the point is this: Some seemed to assume he was using every bit of strength he could muster.
To me this says more about what they would do were they in Zed’s place than it does about Zed.
So overall thank you Chris for making me think.

You hit it right on the mark.
There was a whole lot of hypocrisy on display the other day.
TANSTASFL applies to interpersonal relationships and social constructs just as much as it applies to issues of supply and demand.
You get nothing for free, everything get paid for one way or another in the end.
In the social proscription against striking ladies the “payment” is that there are certain constraints by which they must abide. When they don’t they lose the protection of that status.
Doesn’t make them less equal in any way they’re just trading one thing for another, and they aren’t the only set of people that does this.
Where we run into trouble are the well meaning people who want to treat them like children….give them the right without the obligation that balances it….and then wonder why so many of them act like children.

Taking it as given that in our current culture the prohibitions are clearly defined while the obligations are ignored. Are we still bound by the prohibitions, or is it a matter of choice on our part whether to abide by them?
As with the sucker punch question below, requires some thought.

As mentioned, some really good points here and your comments about “Had it been Anatoly…?” helped to clarify one issue for me. However, it requires another question to be asked: did Zed deck Anatoly with a sucker-punch? Aside from the fact that Zed CHOSE to turn things physical, what he did was the equivalent of hitting Sam with a sucker-punch. It’s evident that Sam was not expecting a spanking as she leaned across the hood. If Zed’s not the kind of guy to throw a sucker-punch, then he shouldn’t be deceiving Sam into thinking there’s some loving on the way and then WHACK! WHACK!
Sam screwed up first but, IMHO, Zed screwed up worst.

Good point. Brings to mind the line from Firefly, “If I ever kill you, you’ll be awake, you’ll be facing me, and you’ll be armed.”
Could the argument be made that the use of subterfuge was required because Zed did not intend major injury? My answer would be no. As you say it amounted to a sucker punch.
Of course a prohibition against sucker punches is only valid in so far as we ourselves would consider it unethical of someone else to employ the tactic against us. Perhaps Zed’s view of the matter is different. I’ll have to think on that one a bit.

Several things…..
(1) Given the number of studies students who work in the food induztry I think plenty of libtatds know how to make a sammich…..and coffee
(2) i was raised in a household with spankings from mom and lectures from dad. We all preferred the spankings.
(3) Ping Pong paddles were used by mom if neccesary. My yo7nger brother made them so. He did learn.
(4) When I got married before we tied the knot my wife said if I ever hit her she would leave. I said fine (and having been raised with a bunch sisters who thought hitting a guy was fine) but if you hit me I will leave you and fight for exclusive custody of the kids. She froze and it was several seconds before she said ok. This turned out to be smart as her first reaction anything she does not like is to attack. We still discuss and argue as most couples do but even that is subdued.
(My sisters hitting…..and girls in the neighborhood came from the normal child play…they hit each other too. The mothers said dont hit to them but never ever hit a girl to their sons. I learned to block easiky as i was quicker than most of the them and by the time i was 10 i was stonger. My sisters took longer to vet the message. They jumped me one day when I was 13. Skye made a play for Zed. Not a romantic one, of course, but a sexual one. She’s completely toxic if her sister’s marriage means so little to her.
Agreed.
Never happened, in this arc at least. And I don’t think it will.
