The problem with having what began as a political “police force” (under Woodrow Wilson) is that even if sort of reformed as it was under FDR and later Presidents, sooner or later some Chief Executive will decide that he needs a political police force again, and hey, here’s one all set up and ready to go. Just put “the right people” in charge and give them their marching orders.
Although I would have considered the comparison odious just a decade ago, I would point out that the Gestapo in Germany actually predated the Nazi regime’. “Gestapo” is actually a contraction of “Geheime Staatspolizei” (“Secret State police”), and originally began in Bavaria before the various German states combined and became the Deutsches reich in 1871. By the 1920s every German “state” had their own local one patterned on Bavaria’s. The Nazis simply took the various “state” secret police organizations and combined them into a national one in 1934. And yes, they were looking at FDR and Jed Hoover’s “new” FBI when they did it.
Any such organization can be misused or abused. It just depends on who’s running them, and what their goals are.
And of course, how obedient- and venal- their subordinates are willing to be.

“Investigative journalist Sara Carter reported on Fox News last night that outgoing FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe may be in serious trouble if the information she had received from FBI sources proves to be true.
“I have been told tonight by a number of sources … that McCabe may have asked FBI agents to actually change their 302s,” Carter told host Sean Hannity.
The 302 form contains information from the notes an FBI agent takes during an interview of a subject. It is used by FBI agents to “report or summarize the interviews that they conduct.”
Yep, there should be a lot of perp walking of these bastards out of FBI HQ to the Federal Courthouse.
