In many states you would be pulled over for having a child ride in a pickup bed… back in the day we called it ( truck surfing )…. stand up in the back of a moving truck at 60 miles a hours and truck surf with the wind.
In Arizona, I am told by actual truck dealers that I can have a slide-open rear window, or a truck cap, but not both on the same truck. It’s apparently the law here, though nobody I talk to can explain why.
Passenger compartments typically have a forced air venting system designed to keep exhaust fumes out. If the exhaust pipe doesn’t end at the back of the truck where it can vent into the slipstream there’s the possibility exhaust fumes can accumulate in the capped bed area, then get into the cab via an open back window, when you have both a cap and opening window.

It doesn’t count unless you have a bucket full of green crab-apples with you that you can hurl at the speed limit signs. Back then riding in the open bed of a pickup truck wasn’t just legal, it was a mandatory right of passage.
We don’t have crab apples in Louisiana. We used Miller ‘pony’ bottles.

Really? When I was a kid, truck surfing was riding behind a truck on a skateboard (summer) or sled (winter).
Riding in the back was called “fresh air”.
For us, truck surfing was riding ten feet from the back of a blue-chipper semi going 80; we could shut the throttle down and be sucked along by the wind wake and somehow we didn’t become a decal on the back of the trailer.

Or even sitting on the wheel well or bed rail…
Can’t legislate safety or common sense but once about ’84 (I would have been 20) my business owner was out of town and left me in charge of the biz and
seeing after his 18 yo son. Well, first night the kid takes the truck we used for hauling goose necks and went riding with friends, one of whom was sitting behind the cab up on the rail when something caused him to fall out backwards, low speed but he landed on his head and died the next day. Couldn’t reach his dad but called the company lawyer to handle it which he did and kept the kid from going to jail or even getting charged.
My kids have ridden in the bed since then, when they were small we would ride around the neighborhood with me doing donuts and sharp turns and they would wrap up in a blanket and go “sliding” on the waxed truck bed, banging around left, right, and backwards, got a few bumps and bruises but they loved it and it was safe if not that smart.
Gotta live, but if you want to keep living you gotta have some judgement and common sense.

Back in the days when a young man’s first paying job was often as a newsboy / paper delivery, I’d be up at 5am to roll my papers. By the time it got pre-dawn, I’d have them in my basket for delivery before school.
HOWEVER, there would be those days when the weather made this a problem. A steady rain meant that the end-of-route got a soaked and unreadable mess. On those days, I’d rouse my Dad, we’d load his 1960 GMC stick shift plain-jane pickup and set off. I’d sit on the dropped tailgate with the papers under a tarp and throw them to the houses as we passed.
Yes, the inevitable did happen. A too tight turn, an unexpected pothole and the newsboy was on the road with a sore keister! Sometimes the driver would be a bit down the road before my absence was noticed.
About 60 years ago, one of my uncles rolled his pickup. Two of his kids who were riding in the back didn’t survive. His third child, (Ronnie) had to stay home because he was being punished for something. I think he’s an accountant now.
The wizard of viable electric cars and by far their biggest producer says it would be economic and cultural suicide to eliminate IC engines any time soon if ever. However his operation is not a car company but a tech company, specifically battery tech; the future of electric vehicles depends entirely on that.
Skye should get her kids the eff out of that shithole country (as DT might say) and take Sam’s example on how to be a free worthwhile human and more importantly how to nurture the next gen of them.
Musk also hilariously and succinctly blew Brandon away by responding to some smarmy criticism by saying it might bother him if that was said by “the real president”.
Dude’s a nutcase but he’s a certifiable genius, might be the point-man for the new industrial revolution, and has the wherewithal to do and say whatever he wants. Right now he likes DeSantis, who responded to the support by saying he welcomes the support of all African-Americans. Loving both of those guys.

Brilliant. DeSantis quick-witted response belies the fact that I considered him sort of dull and slow when he was running as Trump’s chosen one…he has come into his own in the last few years as he sees the support for unapologetic God and Constitution-loving Real American values.
We’ve got lots of white African-Americans here, mostly white flight from having their homeland and their productive economy stolen from them in South Africa, but most radically in Rhodesia where the generations of white settlers borne of British and Portugese colonization was reduced from 300,000 to less than 30,000 since the 80’s when its “independence” as Zimbabwe…and many of them from both places did not make it out alive.

Good for them, but no matter how good the battery or how much of a charge it holds, the electricity to charge it has to come from somewhere.
This is what the deluded masses can’t seem to understand.
Far better to manufacture the power ‘on site’ with an efficient fuel burning engine than burn even more fuel to generate electricity then send it along power lines with the inevitable ‘line loss’ and wasted energy heating up transformers then lose even more in a charger that may or may not function and may or may not have been vandalized. The mpg of a power plant is pretty much net zero.
Those deluded masses have been sold a bill of goods for decades, wishing and wanting things to be true that only even exist at all because of greed and graft. But nothing is static, everything evolves including power sources; we can look to the first industrial revolution for proof and illustration of that.
So all the lies, the useless panels, the faulty technology, and most importantly the inability to store, disseminate, and recharge power which stole untold treasure for fake support and probably set the research back by years, is finally on the cusp of viability as new tech and materials for power storage come online. That will happen, and that should happen, but even the leader of the whole electric car industry knows and openly says it’s years, maybe decades, away.

The strip where the twins are 13, getting ready to fly to Argentina with ‘Toly and Naomi, and are driving “Ant Naomi” nuts, I.e “Can we slide down the emergency escape?” is a classic. Either Sam or Naomi had the perfect deadpan reply: “Lock ‘‘em in the baggage compartment.”

Oh, and that “Aint” on the lips of those redneck chilluns was most often followed by a typical Southern double-name; I and our kids have spent 50 years hearing my sweet Georgia Girl speak of her South Georgia farmgirl upbringing with stories about Aint Mary Nell, Aint Ida Lee, etc etc.
