In order to survive long enough to reach the exalted status of Old Fart, one simply must know history.

there is no such thing as an “old fart”. All farts are new and they dissipate quickly. History tells us that. Any exultation arising therefrom could only count as a sudden and momentary relief.

    So true.

DC does need a good enema and a total colonic swamp flush.

Sometimes you need to work with a bad enema. Waystations in the goal to good.

The number of actual books containing rather accurate accounts of history that have been flushed into trash is upsetting to me. Especially when I have aided the people and they were indebted to me, and they should not have broken my trust.
But I surmise that is the enema flush sewage that we have in too many places today. I an only count on myself. Hopefully history will take care of itself. People create new history every day. And they don’t have to cut and paste new history like the CCCP and others did in real life and in fiction.

If it isn’t on the internet or media it does not exist. That is who the enema is playing to.
    Read the room.

The enemy of my enemy is at best an ally of convenience. At most common, somewhere between “useful idiot” and “target of opportunity.”

Deny such assets to the enemy, but never at the cost of actually trusting them as friends.

Mark Twain said that history doesn’t repeat itself, but it often rhymes.

Last night I was watching Cromwell (1970) starring Richard Harris. And I felt like I was watching CNN or C-Span except with British accents.

Oliver Cromwell ended as Lord Protector of England after finding out the hard way that his Parliamentary allies were no more trustworthy than the King they’d “shortened”. All of them were strictly in it for what they could steal; one of the Parliamentary bigwigs, Lord Manchester, was the biggest “legal” land thief in the realm (with Royal authority to do it) before he deftly switched sides.

In the case of England’s first two Kings named Charles, the first was an arrogant, delusional demagogue, and the second was a drunken lout. I’m not sure how this one will work out, but his track record isn’t exactly reassuring. Which one Slow Joe is going to be compared to by future historians is an interesting question.

As for the “Long Parliament” and our own Congress, there isn’t any noticeable difference, other than ours today having more actual members than theirs did in 1641.

I’m beginning to think that H. Beam Piper was correct in Space Viking when he said that there may be something fundamentally unworkable about the concept of “government”.

Mostly that it gets conflated with “governance” which is something entirely different, and fundamentally nastier.

Touching on that era, of Charles I, Cromwell, etc., there’s the old song “The Vicar of Bray”, which has the Vicar change his “beliefs” to fit, as each new ruler comes along. The song fits for so many of our politicians!

Sounds as though Sam is referring to a time when Russia was a friend. I remember when Russia declared for the north during the Civil War. I remember a time when America launched not one but two invasions of Russia. But I do not remember a time comparable to what Sam seems to be referring.

Think both World Wars. First the Tsar, and then Stalin, relied on U.S. industry for much of their armaments.

The Russian Army in 1945 had an entire Tank Army equipped with M4 Shermans, to cite just one example.

Tanks are one thing but logistics is what wins wars, and at one point in WWII 2/3rds of the Soviet truck fleet had been built in the US.
The trucks were crated in the US, shipped to Iran, reassembled and used to transport everything else coming off the ships to be sent north.
The Soviet Union owed its continued existence to US industry, and then to the nuclear secrets they stole, but the one thing they couldn’t steal was the genius of the Framers.
The Russians are, to this day, learning the sad truth about Human Nature that the Founders and Framers sought to rein in with their Faith, multiple layers and divisions of government, and Checks and Balances. They are now paying the price of having created a culture of out-and-out corruption that the Soviet Union inadvertently produced.

Russia was entirely motivated by self interest in its alliance with First Rino Lincoln. Even sending his navy fleets was self-preservation and a way to discourage France and England from joining the Confederacy as their primary trading partner. Typical for the Frogs to jump, pathetic for the Brits. Very likely those European knives to the back of the nascent sovereign nation were the fatal wounds, not those inflicted by the genocide inflicted by Rino Abe on what he claimed as his own people. Russkies can’t be trusted, then or now.

The enemy of my enemy is my … not friend, in many instances. Maybe frenemy is a better contemporary term.

Joe Stalin quickly became an enemy of Hitler, despite the two of them having a pact and starting WWII together by carving up Poland.

Unfortunately, gullible Democrats ceded half of Europe to Stalin post WWII. despite being our “ally” in WWII; Stalin was never our friend. A forty year Cold War followed.

Old Blood and Guts was dead on right about this.

Also … during my US Navy service in the 1980s, I deployed three times to the Persian Gulf as Ronald Reagan had us escorting tankers out of the Persian Gulf during the then Iran-Iraq War.

As both of those countries were beating each other up, Shiite vs. Sunni, I never saw either one of them as a “friend.” It honestly seemed best to let the two radical Islamist ideologies just beat the hell out of each other and stay out their way.

Many times, the enemy of my enemy is just another enemy … or frenemy as said before.

Not a single “friend” or “ally” of the USA in NATO or the EU stood up against the in-your-face obvious-to-kindergartners voter fraud of 2020. Not one. They all apparently were more than fine with NATO’s new commander-in-chief being an illegitimate, criminal dementia patient, controlled by unknown puppeteers behind the iron curtain hung in front of the disenfranchised American electorate.

Kinda puts the whole “friends and enemies” thing in a whole other perspective.

So I had almost let myself believe that it could be possible for what passes as the conservative party to install Trump as its Speaker. Not sure of the Constitutional or legal process but I can imagine him in that role, unrestrained by the office of POTUS, tearing some new assholes within and without the R party. Alas, today he gave a lukewarm endorsement (“he would be a good Speaker, maybe a great Speaker…”) to the milquetoast McCarthy. DT disappoints, again. When do we have to admit to ourselves that he is done?

My own frustrations have mostly to do with all the life-or-death things we are NOT being told – about Covid1984, unacted-upon evidence against top-tier Deep State criminals, the failure to do anything about election fraud, etc – that he owes the base explanations, but has said next to nothing for 2 years about. And it just occurred to me that maybe the best part of a Speaker Trump would be that the so-called media could not avoid covering him non-stop, almost like the early days of his admin. They’ve done their best to cancel him but can you imagine his diatribes from the lectern, delivered in prime time? Ha!

Sadly if there are any brains among the R’s that think in such terms, they either withhold it as they are playing for the other team, or they’re just too afraid to buck the RINO’s and endanger their sweet seat.

McCarthy has about as much potential for success and the longevity as the Speaker of the House as any of the Chicago Bears picks for franchise Quarterback since the days of Sid Luckman.

Bill Wade, anyone? Rudy Buckich? They make Paul Ryan look good, as Speaker of the House, or as an NFL Quarterback!

The Chicago Bears are where pro football quarterback careers go to die, and the RINOs are where conservative political careers go to die.

By taking the RINO position they ensure that they have risen above their level of competency, and, that all they have to do is follow orders and they more money and have more power than they could have ever dreamed they would have. Being a criminal or a traitor (or both) can pay very well.
