Out of my estimated 10,000 gun transactions over 40 years maybe only a dozen Parkers; just not what your average deer or thug hunter was looking for or could afford. So I imagine our resident aficionado Spin will correct my ignorance of these gorgeous Yankee guns. Ain’t no new ones and Zed’s could be early but looks like a standard Repro double so a nice one for 5k, but you don’t have to try too hard to spend 20+; did you see that option list on Spin’s 16? And if you’re a crossover antique nut 100 is not unheard of…any of which is a little spendy for a snake gun. But maybe it was Dad’s and it’s a fenceline reminisce thing; his to do with as he pleases.

I agree with you Bren. It probably came from his father, the Sam Elliot look alike. I just watched him in a 2000 remake of the 1962 thriller, “Fail Safe”.

“Used” Hammerless Parkers were made from the 1888 to 1942, 16ga’s from the start. Light for ga Parkers were a thing in the 1890’s, so you would see 12ga on a 16ga frame and 16ga on a 20ga. The 28ga really didn’t start appearing later 90’s. These were mostly Damascus Steel tubes. Parker Titanic Fluid Steel tubes didn’t start until 1897.
My DHE 16 Zero frame 28″ cost way north of 5K but values of Parkers are sorely influenced by condition and grade. I acquired mine over a 30 year period as an usable investment. Forced “retirement” from a 30 year job has the spousal unit contemplating emptying the safe of my toys er investments. Last shot mourning doves with it.
Just of note, if you really want one of America’s finest fowling pieces, gentlemen older than me are liquidating their collections. Very nice specimens are popping up now. Guns that have been safe queens for decades are seeing the light of day. Check out the PGCA website for much more info.

PS: It is my understanding that Zed got the 16ga from his Dad. It’s the best way. Hopefully he has 2 more for his full brood.
… maybe he has been jabbed and multi-boosted. Many of the recent studies of the newly departed show circulation and/or heart issues that are unusual for the young. That would be on my mind had I acquiesced to the diktats of the State.
Ahhh, the Cult of the Parker. Ive heard more’n one ‘Smith bad-mouth them as the cheap farmer’s tool that got upitty, and being a ‘break if ya look at em wrong ‘ P.I.T.A. Action parts improperly heat-treated, etc. I’ll take a good M-12 Winchester any day….
Or a Remmie, esp since Parker moved to Ilion long ago. OTOH, get some new reading material on Parkers as what you have repeated is straight from the green with envy crowd, all totally bullshit.
I used to repair paint Chevies in the factory.
Our team visited a dealership that sold Chevy and Rolls and Bentley.
Our paint quality far surpassed the Rolls. They had sags and color mismatch, etc.

No doubt. And yet RR sells custom paint jobs for more than the price of a shiv and you can buy a dozen or so Malibus for less than the price of a Phantom. Rich people don’t give a shit about value, they are all about the price.
It’s right there on the old dead pawnbroker blog masthead;

I was going to say a ducky and a horsie, but I changed my mind…
What in the… where did that link come from and how did it paste onto my post above? My denseness, I’m sure. In any case, this is the correct link (I hope, since I won’t know until it appears and at that point I apparently can’t edit…)
I resemble that remark.
I keep an old book that belonged to my wife in elementary school in my ‘reading room’, ‘Everything I Need To Know I Learned From Peanuts’.
My two favorite philophers, Charles Schultz and Johnny Hart.

Wow. More “what in the…” action. That original “wrong” link in my first reply above has now changed to the correct link, so I have successfully posted my intended link to the Peanuts strip twice. Do I get some kind of prize? 🙂

@Browncoat, mustn’t leave out Watterston coming in at #3. And I might have to bump Hart up to the top spot. 🙂
Our host is getting there too, just a matter of time and body of work. Emphasis on the “body”. 😉
I’ve found over the years that a nice Fox field grade upland 16ga with #5 shot is a suitable response to any sort of vermin, slithering, crawling or walking.
And of course that immediately reminded me of a Tennessee Ernie Ford classic…try walking out on stage with a shotgun today…
Should have finished…
But my favourite in-the-woods gun for carry outside of deer season is a beat up old Savage 24C in .22/.410, best partridge gun I’ve ever used, “hit ’em sittin’ or flyin'” 🙂
Only problem is it’s decidedly illegal to be caught in the woods with a .22 during deer season, it’s pretty much a hanging offence in these parts, so I’d just pull the .22 firing pin and stick a few .410 3″ slugs in the back pocket, just in case 😉
I prefer a .410 for partridge because around here the shots are generally really close and a 12 or even a 20 buggers up too much meat. This one is choked down so tight you can pretty much always aim to hit a bird with just the edge of the shot pattern, most only had a half dozen pellets in them, tops. Used to carry mostly #7 1/2 and a few #4 for bunnies plus a couple of slugs as long as I had my deer licence with me.
Sorry Y’all about starting the SxS wars but Chris did tell me that Zed was a Parker man but you are correct in pointing out that a “truck” gun was going to get beat up, abused and neglected. Every scratch on that mythical Parker was going to cost the same as a tank of gas. I learned to wing shoot with a 870 Wingmaster configured for casual trap. I wish I still had it as making 40-50 yard shots was a regular thing for those young eyes and reactions.
Personal experience with snakes was when a South American version of a rattler slithered into the Argentinian blind with us. I just casually pulled my foot back and blew the bastards head off. It was long enough to make a nice belt but getting it past customs might have been a problem.
Well, when I chase the spiders out of the old shotgun, a beat-up Sears 12 ga. pump, I have found that I just need to keep blasting away at whatever is the target until there isn’t much left. Works for me.

Might actually be a High-Standard K-man, excellent utilitarian gun, even in your decrepit old shoot-’em-till-they-stop-twitchin’ hands. 🙂

Deeply religious experiences can be a good thing. At least according to those learned theologians, Boone and Otter of Delta Tau Chi.
Yeah … and that deeply religious experience deserves a song dedication.

Yeah, it’s more like “babe I’m sorry but I got to spend the marriage money on a Parker 16 that Spin was talking about…”
All Zed’s fault for using a 5K double as a truck gun…
JTC,
$5k for a used Parker, correct? Because brand new it would appear a wedding would be cheaper.
Used? I’mma go with inherited.

I’m with John–I’m a slide action addict. Model 12s, 870s, Ithaca 37s. I can’t hit $%#^ with side-by-sides, and stackbarrels aren’t much better.
One S x S I could get behind is a nice Drilling–16 x 16, with a 9.3 x 74R underneath out past full choke range.
And of course many who drive Chevies think and say the Rolls is crap too. They ain’t necessarily all wrong, but still…
