We would, but bearing in mind that people like the Dons Portago and Trump measure their self-made wealth as a scorecard; it is their life’s work and like everyone else they want to be and feel successful at it.
So yeah, while 100 mil is still enough for a very nice home or three, carefree travel and all the comforts one could want, whatever financial cataclysm struck Mr. P’s balance sheet that took thousands of millions down to a mere one hundred of them, must be majorly disappointing and depressing.
Compare that with President Trump whose billions might well also be yugely reduced by his following the call of patriotism to spend a few decades of his time to be our CEO in the Deplorable Organization to save the world. But he is doing it by choice and by pure magnanimity so his attitude and response is likely quite different than Portago’s.
I don’t know enough of the backstory to as to the source of P’s wealth to know if it would be good for him, his family, and us…but maybe he should take a page from the book of the other Don and consider public service?

On the subject of what someone has…back when Burt Reynolds posed nude for Playgirl, it seems he had one of his hands strategically placed. And one fellow I knew was telling everyone that his grandmother heard about that and responded that if he could cover it with one hand she wasn’t interested.

Given how long ago Burt posed, his grandmother was probably around 24 then.

A very Happy New Year to all. I have been reading DBD since I was in Iraq in 2005. While I rarely comment, I have greatly enjoyed reading the comments and post here. On a personnel note, I put on my first uniform in the Fall of 1982 (University of Tennessee ROTC). As of midnight my title has changed from SSG to retired. I leave the Army National Guard in the hands of GenXers and Millennials. They are spoiled, unruly, confused, and their music sucks. However I’d lace up my boots and deploy with them tomorrow. Just like all the generations before, they’ll do us proud. Once more Happy New Year and may God bless this Country!

Enjoy your well earned retirement. I retired in 1989 and still miss the life every day. Many years working in industry simply do not compare to the 20 wonderful years I spent with men and women of character and competence in the Air Force.

What Bill M said, mostly.
I spent 20yrs US Army AD (78-98), along side some excellent people. As of EOM Feb 18, I will have been retired, as long as I was in. And I still miss “the life”. As for doing it again, I’m afraid that the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.
Happy New Year to you, and never get too complacent in your retirement. That way lies an early death.

Congratulations SgtCapt. Sounds like your career paralleled mine. I retired in 2012, moved to SC, and got recruited into the State Guard, a volunteer Emergency Response force under the State Adjudent General’s Office Mostly military retirees, with some youngsters: Search and Rescue, Engineers, Communications, Supply, Medical, Chaplain, Provost Martial, Etc. Twenty-three states have State Guard organizations. There is a StateGuard Assn website (SGAUS.org) where you can find if your state has one, and how to contact. Check if your state has one. It’s a great way to put your military and other skills to use in the service to the public. I’m the Chief Instructor for the Spec Ops Diving Team, and having a great time with some fine people.

Alas, the travails of the rich are beyond comprehension of the plebes. A tale I heard as true came out of India in the time of British rule: A Rajah had seemed dead, and heirs rushed in to grab things. But he’d only been in a coma, recovered, and then began lawsuits to regain the property taken. It got drawn out, and a British official asked him why he bothered, since there was relatively little money involved since he was one of the world’s richest men. For the principle of it, of course. Then he was asked what he’d use the money for when it was recovered, and his reply was that he’d spend it just like any other man would, on women and elephants.
Happy New Year to all.

Thanks for the invite. I’ll check it out. As to my pay I’ll draw O3 pay starting on my 60 birth month, minus 9 months for deployed time. Unfortunately when Congress allowed us to knock of time spent in bad places they didn’t make it retroactive. And yes the DD214’s are in a fireproof box in my fire proof gun safe.

Happy New Year to Chris and all the other deplorables here in DBD land. Hopefully this time next year we will be looking at a solid GOP majority in both houses to enable President Trump to continue reversing the damage that a century of lib/prog nonsense has caused.
On another note, it is a balmy 24 degrees in Marfa (the closest reporting station to the DD Ranch I hope) with a wind chill of 18. Whole bunch of rick hard pokies there this morning. Just imagine it. 😉
Started New Years morning here in Heartland Florida by the pool with good strong Folgers, enjoying a pretty blue sky dotted by light clouds and temps hovering around 70.
Started to do a little work on a small tilt trailer I’m rebuilding that will tote a Kawasaki powered lifted golf cart I got for the grandkids to enjoy when they’re here (I’ve lived on this neighborhood golf course for 26 years come April; it’s nice for the open green space but I’ve never swung a club there, just not my thing).
But my piddling was interrupted by the expected front moving through; greying skies, and a misty rain that would be sleet if we were up at the North Georgia mountain place. Here it is prelude (finally!) to some mild wintry weather to kick off 2018..several days with crisp clear skies and highs in the fifties, and it might even plunge into the mid thirties in the overnights. Just about perfect for my taste, at least for a while, the warm and muggy eighties like we had for Christmas might sound mighty welcome to some right now, but I do get sick of it.
As I say that I am however mindful of the my Dad’s favorite old trilogy of connected truisms that ring so true; “familiarity breeds contempt”, “absence makes the heart grow fonder”, and “you don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone”. Reflecting this day on the past, present, and future I am fully aware of how blessed we are and my resolutions always include not becoming complacent and taking our good fortune for granted.
On that note, I will take this opportunity to wish the world and especially the greatest nation on earth a happy, holy, healthy, and thoroughly Deplorable 2018 and beyond!

The weather down B’ton/Sarasota, is about the same. Stayed up early and enjoyed a little good drink, a little nosh, and some fine Brakken while listing to firecrackers, fireworks and a few stupids with guns. Spent some time educating the granddaughter on proper winter clothes who just moved north of DC for Grad school. Korean War bomber clothes work well for 140+mph ice boats. She thought that was too much. Kids.
God Bless Y’all With a Great New Year! Thanks Chris! Looking forward to more Great DBD!
