IIRC, they were also packaged in special orange wrappers, both to make them distinct from the standard US military product and easier to find on the ground. We found that dropping them loose from high altitude was the best way to deliver, as it kept the aircraft out of danger, and by scattering them kept local warlords from absconding with them.

NYIAC, my wife is in her early 60’s and my daughters are in their early 40’s but I would not want any of them to go strolling alone in downtown even here in semi-rural Sebring, let alone Miami or where we’re from in Palm Beach County; the dope cancer is everywhere now and even with me along and a piece in my pocket, situational awareness is critical and I would just as soon avoid places and situations where vigilance has to be so constant.
But I like your parallel with Cubans…my first real job was in a sugar mill in western PB County side by side with many excellent welders, pipefitters, millwrights, -even some Bay of Pigs veterans- many of whom had been businessmen, landowners, doctors, lawyers, etc. in pre-Castro Cuba, and the great majority of whom were very good people, with no complaints and no drag on social services…they were grateful to be in the US and worked hard to rebuild their lives.
Then of course Jimmah Carter did to us what Bobo is doing now (is it coincidental that both were in their last year of office?)…welcoming any and all Cubans with open arms. While Carter did it out of naivety, stupidity, and mis-guided Christian values, it took Castro about five minutes to empty his jails, asylums, and streets of every criminal and scum on his island, ruining South Florida for many years to come along with the reputation of the Cuban population. And often overlooked is that this was concomitant with rafts loaded with Haitian filth (a “people” so nasty, lazy, and useless that they are not allowed on the other half of their nation’s island) along with South Americans including the savage Columbian cocaine cowboys.
And yet all of that pales compared to the onslaught of predators and parasites being orchestrated by this administration. First and foremost, there is nothing naïve about it this time; it is an intentional effort to alter and destroy our society and replace us as the electorate in a deteriorated dimocracy. And it is not concentrated in one geographic area, it is very strategically distributed. Most important and most cataclysmic is that the 125000 or so that so harmed South Florida is a drop in the bucket to the millions who have and who will inundate and overwhelm us. South Florida may have (somewhat) recovered after three decades, but this nation can never recover from the complete demographic takeover that is now underway.
God help us if there is not a political seachange and/or popular insurrection that will stop and reverse this evil plan…and by the way I didn’t see a damn thing last night that altered my opinion of what -and who- is capable of that.
