Most people are “just people”. Even most liberals/democrats. As it was in the beer halls of pre-nazi Germany, so it is in the Starbucks of the US today. People want things to be “better” in some qualitative or quantitative way. A loud voice confidently promising the moon gains traction.
In this climate, an opposition party that only promises turning back the clock, loses as the Republican party has lost. The Republican party hasn’t won an election on its own merits since 2000. Every gain made since was the reult of external factors our of their control.
2002, 2004: 9/11, war in Iraq.
2006 and 2008 were losses due to war-weariness and the prospect of ending White Guilt by electing a black Prez
2010, and 2014, Obamacare and other Obama admin stumbles gave away first the House and then the Senate.
2012, another loss because it was a fair fight. No issue put its thumb on the scales. and Romney lost.
40-60% of the Democrat party are potentially allies. Don’t make the Romney mistake and alienate them by assuming something about them that isn’t true.
