OT a little – a study came out recently investigating lower-than-expected power out from large windfarms of about 30-40%. One hypothesis is that a windfarm / city buildings disrupts the airflow leaving less wind energy for a downstream windfarm.
I’ve been wondering for years what the impact of large windfarms would be on wind speeds. Since the windfarms are removing energy from the wind wouldn’t the rain / snowfall patterns change? More precipitation on the windward side of things since there is less wind energy to get moisture to the leeward side of things?
People from Argonne National Labs speculated that the impact would not be measurable due to the large amount of wind energy from which the windfarms were removing a miniscule amount. I didn’t think anyone was even studying this possible effect on weather. I don’t think that the researchers are even looking at weather effects, just wind power generation effects.
So much to learn about how nature works, much less how we affect things…..
There is research into that. The conclusion so far was that they caused heating. If I remember right, It was something about causing warmer low level air to mix wih colder upper level air.
Sorry, just got back from travel and too tired to find the article.
That’d be interesting to read – I’ll have to do more searching….

Notionally, a flap of a butterfly’s wing can cause a tornado on the other side of the world, so it is not unreasonable to expect the removal of any energy from the wind flow to have a significant, but unspecified effect.

I wrote a letter to a anti-wind farm coalition a few years back, questioning if any body was looking at the Polar Vortex dipping further South due to Wind Farm slowing of the traditional West to to East prevailing wind patterns here in the CONUS. Never heard back.
Do we really think that man is capable of slowing the wind to such a degree that it will affect the weather? I guessing that slowed winds will not effectively dissipate the results of “farting cows”.
See “Weather gauge” in naval combat pre-steam era. Sailing men o’war always tried to get upwind of the enemy so as to run before the wind as they came into range in line of battle.
A line of battle upwind of an enemy one could at least partly reduce the wind reaching the enemy’s sails, thus drastically reducing their speed and maneuverability.
The same effect is seen here in a slightly different mechanism. Either way, whoever’s upwind acts as a wind break on whoever’s downwind.
Also, on land, terrain must be taken into account. For instance, in New Mexico, around White Sands, you wouldn’t want a wind farm too close to the east side of the Organ Mountains, as the ridge acts as a huge windbreak and creates a mountain roll swirl on its lee (east) side. Neither of which does wind turbines a bit of good.
Wind farm gurus could learn a lesson from the sodbusters of the 19th Century. They were careful about where they put their windmills, because the windmills pumped the water from their wells.
A windmill in the wrong place generally meant no water, and a failed farm.
Swan sonic, I’ve been wondering the same thing about solar farms. They would be moving heat from areas that normally receive it to cities that are already heat islands. This could also change wind patterns, as well as heat distribution over the surrounding area.
Solar farms generate extra heat where they are, as you can read here, since they’re dark and absorb sunlight but only a small portion becomes electricity, the rest of the energy is released as heat. It’s about the same as dark roof shingles.
Since solar farms are built over lighter-colored ground or vegetation, the temperature rise should be noticeable. The extra glare for pilots is not great either.

Easily understood. My initial thoughts years ago came about after a visit to New York City. I wondered how much the jet stream changed with the changing of a forested river delta system into the New York Metropolis cluttered with big buildings absorbing heat, dumping into the air with AC systems with multiple zones of burning gasoline, diesel and jet fuel heat. That is a huge heat island where there used to be a large carbon sink.
Don’t try to tell me man doesn’t affect the climate. We need to better understand how the Earth’s climate operates and how our activities affect it. We’re a looonnngggg way from that.
No reason-able person would argue that man has no effect on his environment, just that the impact of his existence and survival is but one component of it like myriad others.
Elites no doubt understand that but focus on it in order to further their true agenda to control it and us. This is much like their pretense of concern in their use of the various components of society (useful idiots) to buy their own continued power in order to seize and diminish ours. Of course immigration and gun control are their primary targets as it were to that end, but man’s effect -and his very existence- in and on the world is just another part of that.
This thread exposes that in their blind ambition they and their attempts at that are an yugely ironic actual contributor to that which they seek to use for their nefarious attempts to obtain and exert control.
Control is Power is Money. Always follow the money.
None of which is to say that as God’s chosen managers with dominion over all else, that we shouldn’t be concerned with our environment and how to least negatively affect it. But the elites concern for it is completely disingenuous, and in fact they would prefer a population reduced by about 90%, leaving just them to enjoy their perfect world and enough grunts to run it.

Removing ranchers like the Bundy’s from desert grazing land reduced the population of those dear desert tortoises by over 75% wherever the greedy land deals occurred. (About 53 0f the about 54 ranchers in their area were removed by federal actions.) Their US Senator was arranging land deals that used the area as natural mitigation. But that removed the stewards from the and, the water rights they tended, and the grass they grew and the cattle that provided the poop for the desert tortoises to eat and thrive on. Can i say poop? OK. Feces. Or scat. Or Pelosis. (that was uncalled for)
I do like all the tortoises and believe that people should hold stewardship over the land responbsi9bly and not be greedy people who would do anything for their own control and profit.

To chase off an inquisitive shark, when they come to bump/taste you, a good hard hit in the nose, eyes, gills or other sensitive area will convince them you’re not worth it and they will depart. The only exception to this is if they’re in large groups and/or feeding frenzy, which shouldn’t happen unless you’ve chummed the waters first. (I used to be a SCUBA instructor)
