Making a horn work through all that fur is a real trick.

And doing it while helmed isn’t? [VERY wry grin&wink!]

      Still, honor & respect.

Born after me, and I’m still alive and kicking (albeit not very high). So sad, a good man gone in his prime. I hope he was able to headbutt the Reaper.

I used to play in the Middle Ages, back when I was a lot more durable. SCA combat is/was brutal, perhaps especially so in Atlantia. Still got my armor, but it doesn’t fit so well as it did.

62 and still swinging a stick in minimal armor. I used to play the baritone also.

Last night at the top I wondered if the episode feting Mr. Larsen’s hero Merek involved a Portago-level contribution to the cause (if so, on behalf of all of us, thank you!), but it’s gone, not sure if I screwed up and didn’t hit the post button as I often do, or if Mr. Muir took some sort of unintended offense? If the former, just my typical ineptitude, if the latter, my sincere apology, either way a great change of pace ‘toon.

At first I was pretty sure the depiction of Merek was Marx…could not be further from the truth, but that comparison would’a had me letting that bushy beard abide somewhere other my face. 🙁

Ah, ineptitude it is then, again.

So, The Portago Prize…a custom Sunday ‘toon; a true art bargain at that price, and the other 364 days of entertainment and -dare I use the term in its actual sense- enlightenment…

Wish I could afford it; not anymore, but what a great bonus offering for them that can, probably book up the whole year at fundraiser time, worth consideration in your promos Chris!

I don’t know if you see replies after the fact, but seeing this post just now reminded me that I had forgotten that I had posted a simple reply of “The flexed hands” on the previous strip (for the 21st — referring to its first panel) and just now went to that strip to see if there were any replies to it and couldn’t find the post. I remember that I didn’t see it right away after I posted it and thought maybe it didn’t “take,” or that I maybe forgot to hit post, and tried posting it again, but got a “Looks like you posted the same thing twice” message. Is there something I don’t know about, or could the JTC comment above be referring to a similar something-or-other going on? Just wondering…

      • May 23, 2022 at 4:02 pm

(and see, just now, I AM seeing the reply above immediately after posting it, so something was/is different. Curious…)

The armor comment triggered a memory. At some point, I was getting a new suit at an old establishment. I mentioned that the old one had shrunk. The tailor/rep was concerned about his product quality. After he looked at my wife, then me, he joined in the laughter.

I should have known you were an SCA fan! Out of the thousands of students I’ve tried to interest over the years, fewer than a dozen ever became followers.

But the were the BEST dozen.

There is this “thing”, called The Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA). People get together, become friends, “dress up” (or down), and become characters from the past, usually in the Medieval or Renaissance periods; Europe, Russian, Japan (Bushido, anyone?). A real hodgepodge. But fun. IIRC, the groups are divided into “kingdoms”. They use padded “weapons”, and have “jousts” and “tourneys”.
Look it up. You may become hooked.

SCA was LARPing before LARPing was a thing.
Sort of like Civil War re-enactments, only further back.

Used to play SCA for years. This is the first year I didn’t renew my member ship. I still have my armor, but the likelihood of me returning to the game is pretty low. Shoulder and arm injuries prevent me from being able to swing a sword or hold a shield, but there is more than fighting to the SCA. My ex is deeply involved, so another reason to step away; you split up more than cars and household goods in a divorce.
