The scary part is that the service’s “experts” can’t gauge the difference between 300 and 500 yards. Apparently range estimation is no longer taught.
So that puts both AR’s and AK’s on the ‘executive order emergency ban list’.
I made consistent 500 yd hits on a Fig 12 target at the National Matches with our C7 AR derivative, using iron sights. Pretty much any half-decent ‘deer rifle’ on the other hand would have shot much tighter groups and hit a helluva lot harder at the end. It seems the alphabet agency supplied training for these wannabe ‘snipers’ consists of ‘miss as fast as you can and let the media do the rest’.
Funny how all the dem-sponsored shooters get crap rifles while there are millions of good quality, accurate ones with optics floating around out there…sockboy tried to ban deer rifles up here as ‘sniper rifles’ and sort of succeeded, except he also cancelled the laws in the Criminal Code that imposed mandatory minimum sentences for using a firearm in the commission of a crime…criminals are protected species up here.

So a little further away than a good golf drive ? 300 yds is an easy shot, even for an AK and moreso for an SKS, the sights are their biggest problem and this one was scoped and I assume zeroed. Remember, he was 300-500 yds away when they spotted him, I’d think he wouldn’t have taken a shot until the range dropped as much as possible and if he’d shot from inside the bushes instead of poking the barrel out we might have found out. SS dropped the ball on this one again, where were the drones and the physical sweep of the area ? he’d supposedly been there for over 12 hours, where were the thermal scans ?

Marines in Iraq were reliably punching tickets at 800 with 20″ M12s and low power optics. You’re right about 7.62×39, though.
Also, the Florida bozo wasn’t using an AK47, he was using an SKS with an aftermarket scope rail and the bayonet removed.

Not trying to contradict anyone’s personal thoughts – what I can tell you is that, the right tool in the right hands can be damned effective. I was out shooting with a lady friend of an afternoon; handed her one of those chinese knockoffs, with a water-filled gallon jug out at 100 yards. She clocked that jug with her first shot, which only goes to show ya – some SOB only has to get lucky once, whether at 100 yards or 300. I pray the SOB gets splattered before his/her luck comes in.

SKS shooting 7.62×39 intermediate (note: intermediate) cartridge is good for a couple hundred yards at best by the average shooter.
