Never more so than when he lost his Dad out on the fence line. I felt the pain I saw in his face that day.
I love the messages and commentary here. But when it gets down to it a picture -or a real drawing from the heart and soul- is worth a thousand words…two thousand when the nipples etc. make their appearance. 🙂
Note for anyone winding up on a generator… DO NOT directly power a computer or flat panel TV off a generator. Your asking for trouble if you do. Phase and frequency shifts in the line voltage can toast it quite fast. Putting decent UPS between the w should work just fine. At worst you lose a UPS.
And just what, exactly, brought about this little classroom lesson? Hmmmm? Personal experience?

That’s why I bought a 3kw Honda inverter. Enough juice to meet startup wattage for 2 fridges, microwave, and coffee maker. Can also run the clothes washer, power a floor standing lamp and fan, and the entertainment system when we dust off the Star Wars trilogy on VHS I need to install a transfer switch; after shutting off all the 220 breakers and the AC we should be able to run what’s left as long as we’re careful about leaving too much stuff on. The Honda is quiet and fuel-frugal. And 100% reliable. YMMV.

Okay, but if the commercial power fails (because some angst-ridden group of thugs try to shut off the generating station), does the generator plug into the household line?
Just askin’ because four power outages from lines down over nearly 20 years isn’t not too bad, but on a hot summer day, with the fridge no longer working,…. or in the winter, when I have to light the stove top with kitchen matches to cook….
Damn, I’m going to dig out Granny’s oil lamps. get new wicks and another bottle of lamp oil (it’s kerosene, BTW).
28 days without power during the Ice Storm of ’98 taught me the value of oil lamps and my Coleman stove. Keep them on hand, as well as a 3.5 KW generator. Moved south to Carolina, so double-digit below zero winters are no longer a concern, but power outages during Hurricanes and windstorms are still at least a once a year event.

Punta Gorda:
Should not a laptop battery charger smooth that all out in their recharging?
I’m gonna havta dispute that with ya. I have a Generac 20KW whole house unit that runs on propane that I installed and wired in myself. When Irma came thru Orlando, I was w/o municipal power for just under a week. My genny handled everything w/o a single bobble from line voltage to freq drift. I service it personally and have ‘dialed-in’ the voltage reg as well as the freq. Under full house load, I have less than .5vac fluctuation and the freq typically stabilizes at 60Hz with no more drift than 59-61Hz. That’s well within the tolerances of pretty much every electronic gadget I own….including my 3 keyboards and recording studio. I ran everything from flat panels to 3 different compys, reefer, A/C, lights etc and never had the first issue out of any of them.
Most stable and reliable generator I’ve ever seen. And I’ve had it since ’04.
Was waiting to see that install date. 🙂 This part of central fla was fertile ground for installers of stationary units in’04 and ’05, like yours mostly about 20KW with buried propane tank for fuel. But unlike you most of these folks used contractors to the tune of about 20K total. Extremely reliable, these things fire themselves up for a bit on a regular basis just to self-check. Made sense for those that could afford it as the talking weather heads predicted years of active seasons like those that tore our asses up in those two years. Then they quit, and the gennies went unneeded until a few years ago when a storm took out power for three days. It would have been nice to have that automatic whole-house unit then too, but not sure the return on investment sufficiently offsets the cost compared to something like the two portables that I have, 6500 Troybilt and 7500 Yamaha watts respectively, that let me alternate them 12 hours each to keep the juice on 24 hrs., and a transfer switch that I easily installed keeps six circuits hot for everything but the central AC, and with a window unit in the poolhouse and a rolling portable for the bedroom, it was survivable. Also the motorhome has a 4K Onan that makes it a self-contained escape vehicle. Biggest caveat is fuel, most stations are down after a storm and these gennies burn 5-6 gallons per 12 hr shift, so the math isn’t favorable for long outages…I have nine five gallon jugs and still ran out after a few days, and the motorhome unit shuts down at under 1/4 tank so as not to strand you. And even those big buried tanks can draw down pretty quick with a whole-house load, propane burns at a higher gph than gas, so top it off when it looks bad because that propane truck is likely to take some time off too.
Almost irritates me that I spent a few hours a few weeks ago when there was a potential storm threat -the on that hit the panhandle- changing oil, filling fresh fuel, and running all three of them for a half hour test run, only for that storm, and so far all the storms, to take a turn away from our track making all my effort for naught.
Yeah, I know, don’t be stupid. You’re right, keep them damn him and her icanes the hell out to sea, and prayers for them that got hit.

To both JTC & Merle. I’m not ‘rich’ by any stretch of the imagination but I don’t really consider getting the genny, 250A load transfer switch, 120gal above ground propane tank/plumbed by the guy who delivered it, all for just under $6K “high dollar”.
I went this route after ‘Charlie’, ‘Francis’ & ‘Jean’ collectively left me w/o power for nearly 3 weeks.
Also, the genny/load xfer switch came from READY POWER INC. in Jasper GA, trucked to my house free. I found it online running my compy/interwebz from a 2500W Harbor Freight Tools inverter off my car with a penny under the idle stop to keep the RPM up to around 1500, and a block of wood holding the hood up far enough to help keep the engine cool.
IIRC the genny/LTS delivered to my driveway ran me $3710 total.
You have no idea how comforting the drone of that genny really is at night as I sleep in full A/C.

Hey, count yer blessings about the storm missing you. The checkout maintenance is never wasted as your units are ready to go if needed.
I did forget to mention one thing. When I go on gen power, I shut off the range, (have 1500W nuker/propane grill), hot water heater except for showers, clothes dryer, and set the A/C up to 75. Under these conditions, the tank will last about 6 days running 24/7.
Usually by the time I need a fill, the trucks are back on the roads and the roads themselves are pretty clear.

And that periodic “exercise-cycle” not only does a self diagnostic of the power system, it also keeps the seals in the engine soft, flexible and most importantly, dry. The only oil I’ve ever found on the floor of the enclosure was from a tiny leak in one of the oil cooler lines which I replaced for about $3 from O’Reilly Auto Parts.
You can set the ‘exercise cycle’ at any time you desire. It will fire up on that day/time, run for 12 minutes, then shut down and go back to ‘Stand-by’ mode.
And as for a return on my investment, should I decide to sell the house, I’ve just added at least $12K to the asking price.
And whether I ever need it again for whatever reason…….it’s exactly like a defensive firearm or fire extinguisher……I’d much rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

One other thing…..as far as propane vs gasoline, propane never goes ‘bad’ and doesn’t create carbon monoxide. Also, propane vs natural gas…..IIRC, under (20KW) full load, my unit would burn about 220gph using LPG. Same load on propane, 96. Propane has a much higher btu content than LPG so I’ll actually get better “mileage” than with city gas.
Think of the difference between regular and high-test gas. Yes, it costs a little bit more, but I believe it works out better in the long run.

I need to make a correction……the consumption rate of Propane vs LPG is 220 CUBIC FEET per hour, and 96 CUBIC FEET, NOT GPH for propane.
This what I get for posting before my 2nd cup of coffee.
As much as I hated that reptile, Senator Harry Reid, as US Senate Majority Leader, I am thinking that it is his former ‘D’ colleagues in the current US Senate who hate him more NOW! There was AMPLE WARNING that moving the Confirmation of the Judiciary to a simple majority would bite them, but he ‘knew better’!
Ah, the screams of futility in your enemies, almost as sweet as the Angel’s Choir!
Now, President Trump, do what we elected you for. Put a Constitutionalist on the bench.
Chuck can go pound sand. The American people have spoken back in 2016, and this is not a lame duck president (By comparison, Hidin’ Biden would be the moment of his inauguration, if the worst should occur).
My wife and I were discussing whether Trump should move forward with a SCOTUS nomination (as soon as RBG is safely buried… stake & garlic etc) before the election.
Given the election is coming up soon, the amount of disruption would be epic. The Dems haven’t had much time to dig up dirt on the most recent list of candidates so they might not be able to find a polished “victim” like Blasey-Ford.
Envy. Such a mysteriously ambiguous word to describe everything we see from the left. Including the radical one that the house just landed on. Supposedly her final wish -whether spoken or just scripted by her mourners- was that her replacement not be chosen until a new president is in office. Not just the newly elected or re-elected one, but a new one, a different one, which necessarily would be of the radical leftist ilk even more virulent than she, in order to appease the rising commie wing.
So fuck that evil bitch. She openly hated me and everything I believe in…I will not let her go gently, but happily, beseeching God to send her hateful soul to eternal damnation.
Zed’s scar does give him character. A well-lived in face… I remember when he got it, when he met Anatoli in Afghanistan… I was actually scared for where you were taking us, Chris…

In the pre Trump years the dem’s always pulled that, “There should be no SCOTUS nominations in Presidential election years” bullshit! The spineless, gutless, low testosterone, testicle-less Republicans always went along with it because of the wimps that they were. I seriously doubt if President Trump is going to play that game. He’s beaten them at every turn, I’m sure he will triumph again.
Why not put in a temp and research the best candidate for the permanent position during the period between now and Jan 21? That provides enough time to find the right candidate (which no one will really like) and the temp can go on about her bidness afterwards.
Been researching candidates for at least four years…nominate and confirm immediately. And any Rino who votes against can never ever make a claim to conservatism. Far from temporary what we need to do is lock in for a generation a true conservative Constitutional court to offset Roberts…talk about your Rinos, but worse, more a Trojan Horse.
