I have been a reader of this strip since the beginning. yes at times it has gotten serious and even dark (Zed’s “disposing” of that FBI pedophile) But this story arc has really gripped me and has been in my head non stop. I am so relieved that Kiko is alive plus her baby and will recover. I am deeply hoping that Jack is still alive too but understand that he might be badly hurt and could be in a comma. Kiko deserves happiness and it would be too heart breaking to have her soulmate taken from her at such a young age. Please Chris I hope you thought this over.
So far so good. If hes not already critical or worse status on Jack may ichange when Zed is finished absorbing and proceszing what he just heard. And the good Doctor may have more to say about the little lsdy, we’ll see.
So, two (or three) vehicles as far as the eye can see, miles and miles of miles and miles…and those three find each other with tragic consequences? Hmm.
In two decades of laconically eloquent panels, that change in Zed’s head position to alert and upright in panel two may be the most powerful, yet.
It is a pure definition of “set his face.”
Even if there are no survivors from the illegal’s vehicle, anyone even peripherally involved in that human smuggling operation just felt a chill as Zed walked on there soon to be freshly filled graves.
The “Coyote” was shown in the passenger seat. We never got to see the driver.
When I have to “pull over”, I try to snuggle behind something “substantial”. As the Police know, the drunks and druggies try to drive between the blinky lights. That is why the Po-Po park way back with their steering at a hard left. It may help. In any event, theybseem to appreciate my pulling way to the right.
Long ago, I watched someone “split the difference” between a thru lane and an exit lane by going right up the middle. The sand barrels and the guard rails made quite a mess. I always assume that the bastard is somewhere behind me.
The first panel of the strip on the 21st shows the SUV being driven by the alleged “Coyote” he has one hand on the wheel and one hold a beer that he is drinking from. The Floor of the passenger side has extra beers, some smokes and other stuff but no passenger up front.
It doesn’t portend well for Jack, if he was still among the living, he would have already crawled on hands and knees to get to his future bride and mother of his child by now.
Target fixation. Pilots, drivers, shooters, everybody is susceptible to it. I once was in the cranberry bogs area. Flat lands with no trees, with a friend, we saw deer, but beyond every one we saw, there was blaze orange or red. Don’t shoot. Since there Was still shooting, we left to the nearest food bar.
Hopefully, the reducing of pressure was in time to prevent Kiko becoming Progressive… 😆
Jack may or may not be dead. My hope is not, and that one of the DOAs was a Human Trafficking Victim.
Folks here have admitted how hard this story line is hitting. Chris has had several that did the same, from Sam’s accident, to Skye’s getting her reality checks cashed(Finally. There were like six if I recall correctly). That is why I laughed when I read some dweeb’s comments on Day by Day being the worst-drawn comic ever. The fact that this has hit so hard, is because it is based on things that happen daily. People who read this comic, have experienced very close to the same thing themselves, know someone who has, or seen it in their local news. So, I say outstanding work Chris.
Zed will have a deep discussion with Mari about what ‘Protection means, with *her* boyfriend present, and paying rapt attention, as he will be staring down the barrel of something lethal, or looking at the shears to castrate bulls.
Hopefully the alert is of Zed seeing Jack walking in his hospital garments with his personally removed ICU tubes and needles dangling from him as he seeks his beloved
This doesn’t look good, but I’m waiting to see how it unfolds. Remember, this isn’t Muir’s first time around with a traffic accident story arc. He did one with … was it Skye, or Jan? … quite a few years back. IIRC there was a blue VW Beetle involved? Urban or suburban intersection somewhere? Left us hanging a few days, but in that one it was also the unknown driver of the other vehicle who got the worst of it.

No word on Jack. Drawing out the drama or more bad news?
were two covered bodies in the previous strip: The coyote and Jack, I am afraid.
Either nothing needs to be said, or nothing needs to be said…..
The coyote looked to be positioned to sideswipe, not rear-end the Caddy. Unless something else happened, Jack wouldn’t have had a chance.

Some good news, at least.

There is the story of there being only two automobiles in all of Ohio in 1895, and they ran into each other.
Zar Belk!
In 1946, there were three motor vehicles on Guam, 12 miles by 2 miles big. Two of them got involved in a head-on collision.
One Brit and one American? Both driving on the “Right” side of the road?
The Lord giveth, the Lord taketh away. The Lord here is Chris… death, or life for Jack?
Not the way I’d want to find out I’m a grandparent.
Have we met Jack’s folks?
He has a widowed mother, which is why he’s on the ranch and not at College Station, if I remember his back story properly.

Not to mention the change of expression on Mari’s face from “sigh” to “…erk!”
“Mari, what do you know about this and when did you know it?”
The look of relief finding out the baby is OK. The baby she’s known about all along. Twins, they confide in, and share everything about each other.
I can see Zed going Gibbs on the cartels and traffickers (drugs and human).
They go from little girls to women in a heartbeat.
When in doubt, the “family”, at least the parents, should be there. “Acceptance”. (Of many kinds). The memory loss will require some tender care.

First rule of police driving;
I’d rather have a dozen idiots in front of me than just one behind me.

Correct! Thank you!!
On July 21st he was driving.
I have no words.
Baby is news to the grandparents, I don’t think it was to auntie.
Is that “temporary memory loss” and “temporary mobility loss” or “temporary memory loss” and “Mobility loss”? Please let ALL be temporary.
“…temporary memory and mobility loss…”
Is there a story-branch developing here?
She doesn’t remember the ring, the yes were getting hitched? Hmm

Unless he is in his own ICU…
It’s a f’n cartoon and still I feel sad. I wish I were sufficiently detached so I could join in the speculation and analysis.

“Recovery”.
Such a love/hate relationship with that term and that premise.
:l

Sooo…if Jack has no relatives, Will Kiko get his ranch?(After DNA demonstrates that the child is his only heir)
She was already a DD at least…preggers, when the Tit Fairy arrives, is her Ranch gonna be the JJ?
Hopefully the alert is of Zed seeing Jack walking in his hospital garments with his personally removed ICU tubes and needles dangling from him as he seeks his beloved
Just as Zed did when he went to Sam’s bed after she suffered the miscarriage.
Jack had his seat belt off to reach for the glove box. Likely not good.
Sam’s teenage daughter doesn’t understand about birth control. Right. I’m close to leaving over that alone, if Jack’s dead I’m gone for good.

Jan. Some low life stole and wrecked her Bug in hall of fire.
Damn Chris.
Last night I had to stay up past my bedtime to see who survived. Looks like it’s going to be another long evening.
I’m catching up. Gulp. Chris, your strip keeps getting better. Thank you.
