Much as the hate to admit it, women and girls are always interested in what the men and boys are doing. They may feign disgust and disinterest, but they are intrigued and excited, nonetheless.

The man’s cologne hasn’t been invented that can compete with leather, gunsmoke, Hoppes No. 9, gasoline, sawdust, and power tools.

True. Memory of cutting pulp wood in Maine with dad, stopping on way home for a six pack. Gals in the store all eyes and smiles saying, “Can’t resist a man that smells of the woods”.

At 16, Eva is particularly susceptible.

If Eva is smart, she will walk out there singing Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better from Annie, Get Your Gun, listen attentively to Zed, and then put round after round through the same hole in the bullseye.

Because as every world class marksmanship instructor knows, women are far better students than men. Fewer bad habits to break.

If Eva plays her cards right, Samuel will be singing The girl that I marry

I don’t think Zed and Sam are the type that would let their offspring marry his first cousin. This is Texas, not some Arab country!

About that myth that women are better shots than men. Maybe. The average woman can not out shoot the average man. It’s muscle and aggression.

There are those women who go out of their way to enter “the man’s world” who do well since they are already going against the societies rules. They do want to listen, have no bad habits and have dedication. Those are very few.

And then there are those women who just use it as a bucket list or somewhere to meet guys. They don’t have a gun of their own and won’t be back. At an indoor range they can have initial success but it’s like teaching someone to back up a car or use a car in a straight line. Proficient in a narrow field.

So go to a shooting match and there are very few women but they out shoot the guys unless the guys are as dedicated as they. Those are the unicorns.

I own 11 different handguns and two rifles, and when I took my test for my LTC in 2015, my score on the live fire test was higher than my husband’s. I missed one question on the written test because of the ambiguousness of the phrasing–that was the instructor’s phrasing, not mine–and I still love shooting, and keep my license for the pluses it gives you, even though we no longer require an LTC in Texas.

I’ll be 77 in February. I only wish that I had gotten into shooting years earlier than I did, but I lived most of my married life in the hellhole of California, moving to the great state of Texas in 2014. Now, I wouldn’t live anywhere else. I’ve finally found a place that I really feel at home.

Out where I live, we have what I believe is the last remaining high power rifle team in a public high school in the USA. The team is never less than half girls, often more. They compete at NRA national matches against teams of all ages, including hand-picked service (military) teams… some of whom they have beaten handily. Don’t throw shade at the girls, my friend. 🙂

They don’t flinch when they drop a hammer on an empty chamber. Not sure how that works, but I have seen it.

I dunno about ‘world class’ but I did compete at the national matches and didn’t come in last 🙂 I always preferred someone who had never shot before as a student and as much as I hate to feed the stereotype, a completely inexperienced woman. It’s not so much the breaking of bad habits, that comes to most people with time, it’s the absence of thinking you know how to do everything by watching TV shows and movies and not listening to anyone who knows ‘it don’t work that way in the real world’, and going on to commit the most serious unsafe acts imaginable because “Rambo does it that way”. Boys, and men that still act like boys, simply can’t admit that they don’t know something, give me a womn who wants to learn almost every time. I’ve seen a few ‘Rambettes’ in my time who made me very nervous, but I could count them on one hand.

Eva is older than the Twins. Has to be. She was a Toddler when Skye’s scumbag boyfriend almost got shot by Sam’s big Revolver. I remember because Zed had to tell her to use both hands.

That premise always was correct. When I taught sailing at The Peoples Socialist Republic, Madison, Wi. girls would beg to go sailing. And give me their phone numbers in front of their boyfriends.

I always tell the girls that the reason we have a Women’s division in the shooting sports is because the guys got tired of being beaten!
Some are easier to teach, some just have to much fear to overcome. But all can learn. I encourage all to grasp the basics, at least the safety aspects. Helps to dispel the hollyweird fear. If they come to enjoy the mental challenge, so much the better. As said, shooting is 5% mechanical, 95% mental.
Thanks, Chris for many, many enjoyable moments, and a Happy and healthy New Year!

At the time my husband retired, we lived in Ramona, in the foothills east of San Diego. We moved to Texas a few months later, when our house sold. Now we live in North Texas, out in the country. I’ve had enough of desert cities and towns to last me a lifetime.

My wife is Texan. When we decided to marry, we built a place in the Hill Country (Central Texas) in wine country. Now that I’m retired, we split our time between Canada’s East Coast (where I was born & raised) and Texas.

I am very glad that the move is working out for you and your family. Wish I could move from mexafornia, however the rest of the family will not. I am stuck here until SMOD changes things in this state. It could be worse; it could be in la or sf. Just will not be able to afford moving to a whole new state. Plus, the family won’t move from here, too much libturd instilled in them. Love to vote for the libturds in this state. You know the “working man’s party”.

Re female shooters: I had an instructor (not naming names, but his initials are M.A) who said,

“What would you give to live 5 years longer, have better fine motor skills, and be capable of multiple orgasms?”
